Virtual Learning Day – Friday, October 23, 2026

Posted Date: 10/20/26 (04:30 PM)

Ottumwa Community Schools Families, Students, and Staff,

As many of you know, this has been a difficult week for so many of our families, students, and staff as we process the heartbreaking loss of Shanee Aljets, someone who gave so much to the Ottumwa community and touched countless lives along the way.

We recognize that many members of our school community wish to attend Shanee's services on Friday to pay their respects, celebrate her life, and support one another during this difficult time. Additional information about Shanee's life and services can be found in her obituary.

With a significant number of student and staff absences anticipated, Ottumwa Community Schools will transition to a Virtual Learning Day on Friday, October 23, 2026. There will be no in-person school on Friday.

Virtual Learning Day Expectations:

Students should remain home and complete assignments online or through paper learning packets provided by their teachers. Teachers will be available to assist as needed, and families and students are encouraged to reach out via email or ParentSquare with any questions or concerns.

Students will have the opportunity to complete learning tasks and activities within two days after returning to school to accommodate needed supports, accommodations, and/or electronic access issues.

For additional details on instructional time expectations during virtual learning days, please review our OCSD Virtual Learning Plan.

We understand that changes to the school calendar can create challenges for families, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility. This decision allows our school community the opportunity to honor Shanee's memory and support those grieving her loss.

Our thoughts remain with Shanee's family, friends, colleagues, students, and everyone whose life she touched.

As a reminder, Friday, October 23, 2026, is a Virtual Learning Day. There will be no in-person school.
