Today, Bulldog Nation and the entire Ottumwa community mourn the loss of a true local legend, John Hart.

John was the ultimate advocate for our community and a champion for youth sports. From his decades of leadership with American Legion Baseball to his well-deserved induction into the Iowa Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, John poured his heart and soul into mentoring generations of young athletes in Ottumwa.

John Hart served as the head coach and manager of the Ottumwa American Legion Baseball program (O.B. Nelson Post #3) for over 45 years. His coaching career spanned from 1979 through 2024.

He reached his landmark 40th season leading the program in 2018 and continued his dedicated service at the helm of the team right up through his final seasons, solidifying his legacy as one of the longest-tenured and most impactful youth baseball coaches in Iowa history.

His incredible legacy will forever be etched into the fabric of our school district and community. It was a proud moment for all of us when the naming of the "John Hart Stadium" was approved, ensuring that future generations of Bulldogs will play under the name of a man who gave so much to this city.

John truly embodied what it means to "Be the Best." Our deepest thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.
