Ottumwa Students Selected for Prestigious Iowa String Teacher Association Honor Orchestra

Ottumwa ISTA Students
Several talented student musicians from the Ottumwa Community School District have earned the honor of participating in the Iowa String Teachers Association (ISTA) Invitational Honor Orchestra Conference, a statewide event showcasing some of Iowa’s top young string performers.

Students were selected for this distinguished opportunity based on their chair placement at the Southeast Iowa String Teachers Association (SEISTA) Regional Orchestra Festival held earlier this year. Their selection reflects a high level of musical achievement, dedication, and commitment to excellence.

Representing Ottumwa High School in the ISTA High School Honor Orchestra are:
  • Veronica Blaine, Bass
  • Sonya Lundgren, Violin
  • Simon Marble, Violin
  • Dennis Yan, Violin

In addition, this marks a milestone year for the district, as students from Liberty Intermediate will attend the ISTA Conference for the first time. Representing Liberty Intermediate are:
  • Jayme Ferguson, Violin
  • Marie Henderson, Violin
  • Charles Smith, Cello

The ISTA Conference brings together outstanding student musicians from across the state to rehearse and perform under the direction of guest conductors, offering a high-level musical experience that challenges and inspires participants.

The ISTA Concert will be held at 5:00 p.m. on May 16 at the Bachman Fine Arts Center at Wartburg College. The concert will feature performances led by Kendra Elledge and Dennis Friesen-Carper.

Ottumwa Schools’ orchestra program continues to grow and thrive, with students regularly participating in events that provide valuable performance opportunities, pursuing excellence in performing arts. The program emphasizes skill development, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for music, beginning at the elementary level and continuing through high school.

“We are incredibly proud of these students for their hard work and dedication,” said Henry Weberpal, Ottumwa High School Orchestra Director. “Earning a spot at ISTA is a significant accomplishment for us, and it speaks to both their individual talent and the strength of our orchestra program.”
